Marigold tree tithonia a signal for winter
It is said that the Dalat’s Tithinia originated from central America or Mexico, which explans why it is also called Mexiacn sunflower. The flower was brought to Dalat in the early 20th century when the first pieeces of land on the southern Tay Nguyen (Central Hightlads) were cultivated by the French and Vietnammese people. At first, the tree was planted with an aim to supply organic fertilizer for tea and coffee tress, as it was easy to spread and could be planted with branches. Therefore, Tithonia soon became a popular kind of flower all over Hightlands provinces. To day, as winter is coming, wherever you are on the Highlands, you can see the bright yellow colour of Tithonia. Obviously, Tithonia is a foreign flower. Nevertheless, because of the fondness to its bright color brightening up on the grayish, gloomy winter sky, local peoplehave invented a lengend that related to the minority ethnic group of people here. The lengend has it that. Long, long ago, in the village there were two people deeply in love with each orther, whose names were K’Lang (the boy) and H’Linh (the girl). The couple was very hard working and good at singing and dancing, so the villagers were fond of them. In the mean time, the village leader’s son was trying to evil the boy. One day, early in the winter, K’Lang went in the wood with a cross-bow to catch some hedgehogs or java mouse-deer. He was out for the whole day, and everybody in the village was longing for him to come back. He sweet heart, H’Linh, stayed awake ad was worried all night. The sun was rising while her lover was still missing, so H’Linh went into the wood herself in the same direction that K’Lang had taken. She kept searchinh until she found herself in front of an unexpected scene: Her lover was tied up firmly at the bottom of an old tree. The girl rushed towards her lover and hugged him and suddenly arrows were fired at the couple. The girl tried to protect her lover, and finally, she was hit by a poisoned arrow. Her blodd spread in the wood, where a tree greww up and its yellow flowers openned just when winter came. It must be the love for this foreign flower that local people made up a romance-related story for it. Today, Dalat city’s residents even consider the flower a symbol of their land. It has been not only officially used as the city’s symbol at the Flower Festivals held every two years, but also studied by scientists, who wish to create a new species from the Dalat’s Nuclear Institute has conducted a study “Genetic Changes in Tithonia”, which created shorter and more colorful Tithonia. The result of the study does not really say anything yet. However, it shows that this foreign-originated flower has been warmly welcomed by local people. During the cold winter on the Highlands of Lam Vien, the yellow Tithonia seems to convey a message of love from the coupe K’Lang and H’Linh, as in the lengend of the folwer. The flower suffers inself in the soldness to warm the atmosphere, and fades w
